Our Favorite LinksMost of you probably dont know that we, Wild About Birds staff, are volunteers with RAPTOR, Inc. RAPTOR (Regional Association for the Protection and Treatment of Raptors) is a non-profit organization that relies on volunteers to carry out two important missions 1) Educate the public on the importance of raptors and the preservation of their native habitat; 2) Rehabilitate and return injured or orphaned raptors to their natural environment. During business hours, we take phone calls reporting these injured birds of prey and dispatch the volunteers to pick them up. If you are looking for any information about birds of prey or are interested in volunteering with RAPTOR, check out their website (http://www.raptorinc.org).Many of my customers are purple martin landlords. "What the heck is that," you ask? Purple martins are communal nesters. When you put up a multi-compartment house for them, you must assume some maintenance responsibility. All the work involved is well worth it, when year after year your colony of purple martins returns ready to gobble up scores of flying insects. If you have an interest in learning what it takes to be a "good purple martin landlord", take a look at the Purple Martin Conservation Association or Purple Martin Society websites for all the help you'll need! If you have an interest in bluebirds, the website you must visit belongs to the Ohio Bluebird Society. There you will find all kinds of information to help you establish & maintain a successful bluebird trail or set up a nest box in your own backyard. If you want to learn all about hummingbirds, check out The Hummingbird Society's website. Take a look and be prepared when spring rolls around again and the hummers appear in the area. They usually arrive in the Cincinnati Tri-state area during the last week of April or the first of May. You can track their northern migration on the Internet. Many backyard birdwatchers are also very interested in butterflies. I've found a great butterfly website that will answer any and all questions you might have about these beautiful creatures! The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service claims that more than 50 million Americans participate in the hobby of backyard birdfeeding and that this family past time is second only to gardening in overall popularity. If you enjoy gardening, too, check out the website of a well known, local garden shop owner, Denny McKeown! If you live in the Cincinnati area and are having trouble with nuisance animals in or around your home, check out this website: www.wildanimalcontrol.com . I used their services to deal with a squirrel problem in my attic and was very satisfied with their service. I just discovered a wonderful site that you can use for identifying birds - check it out! Here are some other sites belonging to independent wild birdfeeding stores with whom I network via the Internet. Check out the shops if you live in their area or are visiting and tell them "Peggie from Wild About Birds in Milford, Ohio sent me".
Some other sites I've visited are:
Take some time to explore some of these sites and you'll come away with a wealth of information about the care and feeding of our backyard feathered friends. Have fun!
